Eastern Shore Virginia Master Gardeners - Horticulture, Gardening Projects,Gardening Articles.
Eastern Shore Virginia Master Gardeners is a non-profit organization dedicated to gardening and horticulture.

The Pungoteague Project

Once a week the Master Gardeners work with the second grade at Pungoteague Elementary School teaching gardening and science skills.

As you can see from the pictures, the children learn about flowers, vegetables, insects and worms.

From their smiles, you can tell they really enjoy the program!

Each class has its own garden bed where they plant and weed. They plant their own vegetable garden and have a salad party to celebrate their harvest (see photo below). The children also maintain a compost pile.   They learn through experiments, songs, books, work sheets and the year’s grand finale is harvesting their own lettuce and radishes for a salad party and Green Thumb award ceremony.

For Mother’s Day, there is a special project. The Master Gardeners donate plants and flowers for the project and the children make flower arrangements for their Moms in clay pots they made in art class.

Salad Party

The salad party is a favorite event for the second graders at Pungoteague Elementary School. Both students and teachers join in the fun to celebrate a successful harvest.
